Here’s my next race report! (Swedish version at the bottom)
In early June of each year Butlers triathlon is held in Trollhättan. A local and a bit special triathlon where you compete in teams of 5 participants (men’s team, women’s team and mixed team) on the distances 300 m swimming (indoors), 45 km cycling and 13 km running. The day is finished in the evening with a big banquet at Butlers restaurant with food, drink and socializing with a simultaneous award ceremony. The teams are sponsored mostly by local companies who think it’s fun to support the local sport (while getting the chance to do a little advertising for themselves) and a large part of the prices goes to enthusiasts and people who simply impresses by being genuinely good-hearted humans. A really nice initiativ and arrangement that I really encourage.
I have been eager to participate in the race since I started with triathlon. But as the competition has been held for many years and it is often the same teams that compete each year it is somewhat difficult to ”get a foot” in a team when most are already full strength. This year I had put some hooks out and hinted that I would think it was fun to be with. Lucky for me, because barely a week before the start, I was approached by Anders Edh from Team Meddo lacked a teammate. They have previously been competing as a purely men’s team, but now they did not get the team together because of injuries and was open to change to mix teams class. I of course said yes to the challenge and thus formed a team with awesome Anders Edh, Marcus Sandh, Oluf Skoog and Ted Sydhagen. Not much time to prep for race, but it turned out pretty well since it coincided with my week of rest so I was pretty fresh and rested on race day. It probably took some time to get into my head that I was going to compete for it was only about 2 hours before the start as the race nerves hit – but then they hit hard!
Saturday morning turned out with blue skies, moderate wind and a little semi-frigid air. Ok racing weather! Having arrived with all my stuff, found the team’s transfer zone, rigged my bike and gear for T1 and T2 and met the team members (two of whom I met for the first time), it was time for race start. The swimming is a bit special because it takes place in the swimming pool. A team starts at each end of each path, which means that 14 teams (70 people) swim at the same time in 7 lanes. Somewhat chaotic and because the team must be held together with a maximum of 30 seconds between the first and the last member it is not exactly where you make a new personal best time wise. The swimming was still quite ok. Felt strong and well rested. Two of the team members are primarily runners / cyclists and do not swim very often so they were in charge of the speed. We were out of the water and out to T1 in about 8 minutes, and then up on the bikes and set off. Cycling is on a hilly 46 km route around Öresjö. About 15 km is on gravel roads and that, plus the hilly terrain (400 meters altitude), means that there will be no personal best on cycling time either. I had a bit it hard work the first half hour. The guys in the team are really good and experienced cyclists so I had to push quite hard to keep up in a high tempo. Eventually I did manage to swallow my pride and announce to the rest of the team that the intensity was higher than what I could keep up in the long run (was turning out an average of 90-95% of threshold power for the first 15 km) and the pace was turned down slightly. Got a helping hand in the back uphill – mostly by Marcus Sandh who did an awesome job of helping me and holding the team together that way, but the others also helped, and together we got to a really fine teamwork as the cycling progressed. Rolled in from cycling to T2 at 1:39 hours (approximately 1:30 on the bike). A quick change and then on to finish the race with a 13 km run along a quite hilly course on mixed surfaces – asphalt, gravel paths and even stairs! We were connected with ropes to pull together which worked well. Felt that I could keep up with the guys well on the run, although I was a tad more tired after cycling than I normally would wish for a competition. We managed to keep a pace of about 5 min / km and crossed the finish line in 2:44:22. After an hour of waiting for the final results, we found that our hope of a podium placement was achieved and that we grabbed 3rd place (8th overall among all teams) with about 1.5 minutes ahead of number four and barely three minutes after the runner-up. Last years winner (Team ”LackOlle”) took first place again this year with an astounding finish time of 2:31 (second overall among all teams) – so they were far out of our reach this year. Overall, it was a really good day for our trip club since the winning team on the men’s side (”Mediatryck”) consisted of five guys from the club (Kristoffer Jidetoft, Markus Nymark, Robert Kallin, Pelle Ericsson and Patric Johansson). They had a convincing win at just over 2:17 h – 15 minutes ahead of the runner up team!. In the winning women’s team, we found the club girl Nina Bohlander, and second place in the women’s class consisted of only 3CT girls who made a fantastic achievement of grabbing second place despite three flat tires on the bike and a member with an injury in the calf. Even in many of the other teams there were representatives from 3CT which shows what amazingly talented athletes we have in the club!
The day ended as I said with a banquet and awards ceremony. Really fun to be on a slightly different triathlon competition where the focus is mainly on making sure that everyone can be involved, and that the arrangers first and foremost rewards enthusiasts and people who in different ways inspires and drives sport in the local area. It was especially great that our club chairman Kristian Savolainen was rewarded with a special and very well deserved award for the outstanding work he does for the club! I’m already looking forward to next year’s competition – and then hopefully I will not have to hunt for a team …. The rest of the weekend went to the sun, swimming and sailing out on the West Coast. Perfect end to a really good weekend! Now it’s only two weeks left before Borås 70.3 – and only three weeks of hard training left before cutting back on training to be ready to perform my absolute best at IM 70.3 Jönköping! Can’t wait – it’s going to be fantastic!

Race report – Butlers triathlon
Kände mig pigg i kroppen.
Skall bli grymt!
